No Mother Should Die Because a Scan Was Too Far or Too Expensive.
At Jamu Imaging Foundation, we believe that affordable diagnostic imaging is not a luxury; it is the first line of defense in safe motherhood.
The Challenge We Are Addressing
Kenya has made progress, but mothers are still dying from preventable causes. An ultrasound costing Ksh 2,500–5,000 and located 30–50 km away is out of reach for many mothers in high-burden counties. The last-mile gap of cost and distance for imaging remains, even as public maternity-health initiatives have laid an important foundation.
Our Response: The Maternal Imaging Access Program
Through our Healthcare Program, Jamu Imaging Foundation is closing the two biggest barriers: cost and distance.
- Affordable Imaging. We subsidize obstetric ultrasound and chest X-rays for expectant mothers who cannot afford market rates, enabling early detection of high-risk pregnancies.
- Bringing Services Closer. We support outreach and linkages with primary health facilities in high-burden counties to reduce the distance mothers must travel for a scan.
- Capacity Building & Quality. We support training and mentorship for sonographers and clinical officers, and advocate for quality-assured, well-maintained imaging equipment to reduce misdiagnosis.
- Awareness & Advocacy. We drive community education on the importance of four or more antenatal-care visits and early scans, using data to advocate for stronger maternal-health financing.
Why Imaging Matters in Maternal Health
An early obstetric ultrasound can detect breech presentation, multiple pregnancy, low-lying placenta, and pre-eclampsia risk. Timely X-ray and ultrasound reduce delayed referral in bleeding cases. A scan gives a mother a birth plan—and a chance to survive.
Driving Action Through Sport: Road to Nyali Golf Tournament
To spotlight this gap and mobilize resources, Jamu Imaging Foundation is convening partners, corporates, and champions for maternal health at the Jamu Imaging Foundation Charity Golf Tournament at Nyali Golf & Country Club. This is more than a tournament; it is a call to action to ensure every mother in Kenya can access a quality scan, regardless of income or location.
Tournament objective: raise resources to fund 1,000+ subsidized maternal scans and support imaging access in high-burden counties.
